Brakes
If the brakes feel weak, a lever sticks, you see a fluid leak or hear grinding, stop riding and arrange a check. You do not need to take the brakes apart to ask for help.
Simple checks before riding
With the bike powered off, squeeze and release each brake lever. Each should move smoothly and return normally. Look for visible damage, loose parts or fluid around the brake hose and wheel. If something looks or feels wrong, contact support or a qualified bike repairer.
CEMOTO models may have hydraulic brakes (operated by fluid) or mechanical brakes (operated by a cable). Use instructions for the brakes fitted to your model.
What the problem may mean
| What you notice | What to do |
|---|---|
| Lever feels soft or reaches the handlebar | Stop riding. A repairer should check pad wear, leaks and the hydraulic system. Do not open the fluid reservoir yourself. |
| Grinding or metal scraping | Stop riding and have the pads and brake disc checked. |
| Wheel feels held back or the disc rubs repeatedly | Have a repairer check alignment and whether the brake releases properly. |
| Squealing | If braking is weak or the noise persists, arrange a check. Keep oil and chain lubricant away from the pads and discs. |
| Lever sticks or is hard to pull | Stop riding and have the lever, cable or hydraulic parts checked. |
| E02 on the display | Follow the brake-error steps below. |
These symptoms can have more than one cause. Do not buy replacement parts based only on the table.
E02 brake warning
E02 means the bike has detected an unexpected brake signal. With power off, check that both levers return freely and look for anything blocking them. Photograph the code and any visible damage, then contact support if it remains.
Do not disconnect or bypass the brake safety switch to make the motor run. E02 does not confirm that the physical brakes are safe.
Cleaning and servicing
Keep the brake area free of mud using your model's cleaning instructions. Keep lubricant off the brake discs and pads. Do not touch hot brake discs after riding.
Pad replacement, brake alignment, fluid changes and hydraulic bleeding are repair tasks. Bleeding means removing air from hydraulic brakes; it requires the correct fluid, tools and procedure. Have a qualified repairer do this if you are not trained. After wheel removal or brake work, have braking checked before use.
Brake components and warranty
Brake pads, rotors, brake handles, brake cables and covers are wear-and-tear components and are excluded from warranty. Replacements are available at cost — see Spare Parts & Compatibility.
Note the difference between:
- Consumables — pads, rotors, cables: not covered.
- Manufacturing defects in the brake assembly: covered under the 12-month electrical/mechanical component warranty, subject to exclusions. See Warranty.
Brake installation
Hydraulic disc brake systems and brake pads for the D-series are available as replacement parts. A step-by-step video is available: How to Install the Front Disc Brake on a CEMOTO Electric Dirt Bike. See Technical Guides.
For the repairer during assembly: when installing the front caliper, pull the transport plug only after seating the pads — squeezing the lever with the pads removed will over-extend the pistons.
