# Charging Faults Diagnosing charging problems, battery not charging, and low-voltage error codes. --- ## Related error codes | Code | Meaning | | --- | --- | | **E06** | Low Voltage Protection | | **E12** | BMS Communications Error | Full definitions: [Display & Error Codes](https://wiki.cemotoride.com/link/332). --- ## Charging procedure (D-series) 1. Remove the battery from the battery compartment if your model has a removable battery (D02 Track), or charge in place. 2. Insert the charger plug into the battery charging socket. 3. Insert the charger power plug into the power supply socket. 4. Allow to charge fully: **approximately 6 hours** for 48V models, **7–8 hours** for 72V models. 5. Disconnect the charger from the mains first, then from the battery. ### Charging rules - **Charge only with the supplied, compatible charger.** - **Do not charge when the slot or socket is damp.** - **Use the correct power source** for your market — D-series chargers in the U.S. use a two-prong plug. - **Keep away from children, pets and flammable materials** while charging. - Charge and store at a reasonable temperature. Is the charger receiving power?** - Confirm the wall outlet is live — test it with another device. - Confirm the wall outlet is switched on (some outlets are switched). - Confirm the charger's own LED behaves as expected: most chargers show a different indication while charging versus when charged. Slight warmth from the charger body during charging is normal. **2. Charger output** - With a multimeter, check the charger output voltage at the connector. Compare against the rating printed on the charger label. - **No output at all** → charger fault. - **Output well below rating** → failing charger. **3. Charging port condition** - Inspect the battery charging socket for bent pins, corrosion, water ingress or debris. - Inspect the charger plug for the same. - **Never charge with a damp socket.** **4. Battery seating and connector** - If the battery is charged in the frame, confirm it is fully seated and latched. A partially seated battery will not connect to the charging circuit on some models. - Reseat the main battery connector. **5. BMS protection state** - A battery that has been deep-discharged, over-discharged, or subjected to a short will have its BMS protection latched. In this state the charger may see no load and refuse to charge. - A BMS communications fault may show as **E12** while riding. - A latched BMS may require a specialist assessment — do not attempt to bypass or open the battery. **6. Battery temperature** - Many BMS units refuse to charge below freezing or above a high temperature threshold. Allow the battery to reach room temperature, then retry. > **Safety:** Do not open, disassemble or tamper with battery seals. Seal tampering and unauthorized disassembly void the battery warranty and can create a fire risk. --- ## Symptom: charging is very slow - Compare actual charge time against the expected figure (**~6 hours** for 48V, **7–8 hours** for 72V). A marginal increase is normal as the battery ages or in cold weather. - Confirm the charger matches the battery: a 48V charger on a 72V battery (or the reverse) will not charge correctly and may indicate a fault code. - A charger with a damaged cable can deliver reduced current. --- ## Symptom: E06 Low Voltage Protection The battery voltage has fallen below the controller's protection threshold. 1. **Charge the battery fully** and retest. This clears most E06 occurrences. 2. If E06 returns on a freshly charged battery: - Check the battery actually accepts a charge (see above). - Check the charger output. - Check the battery connector for voltage drop under load. - A pack that drops below the protection threshold under load has a weak cell group and requires assessment. 3. Check parameter **P03** (voltage level, 24V–72V). An incorrectly configured voltage level causes the controller to misjudge the pack state and can trigger premature low-voltage protection. Expect a meaningful reduction in winter. - **Age.** Rechargeable batteries have a finite life. Average lifespan is **1 to 2 years**, depending on conditions and usage. Capacity loss is gradual and normal. - **Charger output.** A weak charger can produce an apparent full charge that is in reality a partial one. - **Load conditions.** High speed, hills, wind, heavy loads and under-inflated tires all increase consumption. See [Range & Performance](https://wiki.cemotoride.com/link/335). ### Battery degradation reference The owner manual notes that usable capacity varies with battery temperature: | Battery temperature | Approximate available capacity | | --- | --- | | 14 °F | ~70 % | | 32 °F | ~80 % | | 70 °F | ~90–95 % | This is why a bike used in winter reports a noticeably shorter range on the same charge. --- ## Battery warranty exclusions Battery warranty does **not** cover failures caused by: - Use of non-certified chargers - Overcharging or deep discharge - Physical impact or water intrusion - Seal tampering or unauthorized disassembly - Use in non-approved devices A replacement will be provided where the discharge meter detects **less than 70 % of available capacity**, or where the voltage is abnormal and the battery cannot be charged — subject to the exclusions above. Battery replacement does not extend the original warranty period and does not qualify for cash reimbursement.
