# Riding Laws & Compliance Legal and regulatory considerations for owning and riding a CEMOTO electric dirt bike or eBike. > **⚠ This is general guidance, not legal advice.** Riding laws for electric dirt bikes and eBikes vary significantly by country, state, province and municipality, and they change. **It is the rider's responsibility to confirm the requirements that apply where you ride** before riding. CEMOTO's owner manual states this explicitly: *"It is your responsibility to be aware of and comply with the laws of your location as to the specific locations where it can be used."* --- ## D-Series electric dirt bikes: off-road vehicles CEMOTO D-series electric dirt bikes — D02 Classic, D02 Track, D03 Pro and D03 Beast — are **off-road vehicles intended for use on private land and closed tracks**. They are **not marketed as street-legal vehicles**, and no street kit is included. ### What this means in practice | Consideration | Detail | | --- | --- | | **Public roads** | Not permitted without separate registration, plating and homologation in most jurisdictions — which these vehicles are not sold with | | **Private land** | Generally permissible **with the landowner's permission** | | **Closed tracks and OHV areas** | Generally permissible where the venue permits electric off-road vehicles | | **Public trails** | Varies enormously. Many trail systems permit only registered, plated vehicles — or only human-powered bikes | | **Sidewalks and cycle paths** | Generally not permitted | | **Motorways** | Explicitly forbidden in the owner manual | ### Forbidden roads and surfaces (owner manual) Reproduced directly: - **Do not drive on the motorway** - **Do not drive on roads with slopes exceeding 30°**, and do not venture through steep slopes, uneven roads or other unfamiliar terrain - **Do not ride indoors** or on potentially damaged surfaces such as carpets or floors - Do not ride on water, mud, ice, bumpy, uneven, slippery or rough surfaces where control is compromised ### Classification Electric off-road motorcycles are typically classified separately from eBikes. Classification usually depends on: - **Motor power** (peak and continuous) - **Top speed capability** - **Whether pedals are fitted** - **Whether the throttle works without pedalling** A 6000W peak machine capable of 53 mph will not be treated as a bicycle anywhere. Even the 3000W models exceed the power and speed thresholds applied to pedal-assist eBikes in most jurisdictions. **Check your local classification rules** — and expect that a vehicle exceeding eBike power/speed limits requires a license, registration, insurance and a helmet meeting motorcycle standards. --- ## eBikes: designed for road and trail CEMOTO eBikes — commuter, mountain, fat-tire and folding models — are designed for **on-road and improved-trail use**. Some models are explicitly positioned as street legal: for example, the **CEMOTO EB40** is described as **20 mph, Class 2 Street Legal**. **Where can I ride an electric bike?** An electric bike is legally treated the same as a normal bike in many jurisdictions.
